One needs medical supplies to fight the virus – from protective equipment to nutrient supplements. How does coronavirus spread? Understanding this basic question can help us adjust our daily living to battle the pandemic.

Coronavirus or COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that spreads between people, especially in close contact. It spreads from the infected person’s nose or mouth through small liquid particles leaving the body through sneezing, coughing, and even speaking. Singing and heavy breathing can also produce these liquid particles in different sizes, from the noticeable respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols.

The nose, mouth, or eyes are entry points for the virus – especially when the person is in close or direct contact with an infected person. Close contact is specified as less than one meter apart. Although respiratory transmission is the major path, other infections occur due to touching contaminated surfaces and then spreading the virus to the person’s face, nose, eyes, or mouth.

Social distancing and frequent handwashing are advised to prevent the spread.
